Swimming
The beautiful beach of Caños de Meca is 750 meters away. In summer it is ideal for swimming. If there are strong winds you can head to the sheltered bays at the southern end of Los Caños.
Surfing
The breaks of Los Caños de Meca need a slightly bigger swell to work. There is a right point break rolling into the bay, ideally suitable for longboarders. A little further to the left there is a reef break, which starts working with less swell than the point break. If waves in Caños are too small, drive ten minutes to El Palmar. Here the surf tends to be stronger due to the orientation to the west. If you wish, you can book surf lessons in El Palmar. We are happy to help. The best time to surf is from October to April/May. The water temperature during winter is between 15 and 18 degrees, so a 4/3mm wetsuit should keep you warm enough. Check surf forecast on magicseaweed.com.
Kitesurfing/Windsurfing
Due to the southern orientation of the beach of Los Caños de Meca, you can kite and windsurf here with the two prevailing winds, Poniente (west) and Levante (east). Highest wind probability offer the months form May till August. However, even in the remaining months there is the chance of being able to kite- and windsurf. Especially during winter one can ideally combine surfing and kitesurfing. An extraordinary experience is a visit to the European windsurfing and kite-mecca Tarifa. Here, the wind tends to be slightly stronger than in Los Caños de Meca. Very often the sky here is peppered with hundreds of colorful sails. From Caños de Meca you can reach Tarifa in 40 minutes by car. Kitesurf courses are best booked in Tarifa but also in El Palmar some surfing schools already offer kite courses. Check wind forecast on www.windguru.com.
Horse riding
You can book guided horseback rides or rent a horse and explore the surroundings on your own. There are different places in the nearby area. We recommend contacting Simone from Centro Hipico in Zahora (http://www.reiten-in-andalusien.com; +34620276866).
Hiking
The beautiful surroundings are a pleasure for hikers. Directly behind the Villa Ola begins the extensive, evergreen pine forest “La Breña”, which is crisscrossed by paths. On the beach you can walk north to Conil. Towards the south there is a footpath along the cliffs with some spectacular views. You can hike till Barbate and take a bus back to Los Caños.
Massage
Kala from nearby Sam Ambrosio offers a wide variety of massages, including Relax, Ayurveda or Deep Tissue. For her service she will visit you in the Villa Ola. The prices for one hour start at 40€. A flyer mentioning her services is in the card stand in the entrance area of the house. You can contact her at the following number: +34665186847 (also Whatsapp).
Shopping
In Caños there are two small supermarkets. One is located in the center on the main road, and only open from March till October. Next to it there is a pharmacy, which is open the entire year. To find the other small shop follow the main road towards Barbate. Don`t turn left up the hill but continue straight. The shop is on the left side.
A small supermarket (Coviran) with a good selection is in Zahora only five minutes drive away. It is located at the camping Pinar San José. Drive towards Conil de la Frontera and you will find it on the right side.
Larger supermarkets like Mercadona, Supersol, Lidl, Aldi one can find in Conil de la Frontera or Barbate.
Every Saturday there is a small market in the courtyard of the restaurant Levante, where they sell arts and crafts and also a small selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. You can also get vegan and vegetarian food here and have some drinks in the sun. The place is in Los Caños close to Villa Ola, on the main road some hundred meters before the bus stop.
There are indoor markets with fresh fruits, vegetables, a wide variety of seafood and meat in Conil de la Frontera and Barbate. They are open daily (except for Sunday) till 14:00h.
Nightlife
Los Caños has some little bars. In the summer months (July, August), you can go out every night. Usually you will find live music somewhere. Often the party crowd stays up until sunrise. Spectacular is the Club Mercarola on a cliff with direct beach access. Ketama is a little bar with music, which usually closes last. The beach bar Ohanas has even during low season always something to offer. Usually from Thursday to Sunday – even in winter (except January) – they have live bands playing. Las Dunas is right next door and is also open all year round. The quaint pub has a spectacular interior and invites you to linger – however, the food cannot be recommended here. Only the burgers and sometimes the fresh tapas are quite okay.
Also in the nearby El Palmar, especially from May to September, young party people meet in the bars and restaurants. In this dynamic place, the locations and names often change. Just discover yourself.
In Conil there are many other bars and clubs, which are well attended, especially on weekends.
